While the caption may talk about life challenges, inspiration, struggles, discipline, and the journey behind it, the image itself portrays something unattainable for the majority. This disparity between caption and image can lead to confusion, misinterpretation, and a skewed perception of what yoga genuinely encompasses.

We’ve all seen those perfectly angled photos in beautiful settings, showcasing impeccable yoga poses. I used to post them myself! But here’s the question: When these posts become the primary means of promoting yoga, what message are we sending?

Yoga is a practice that extends beyond physical prowess. It’s a lifestyle, a philosophy, and an art of holistic well-being. Yet, sometimes, the emphasis on striking poses can overshadow the true essence of yoga. 

To delve a bit deeper into this discussion, try Googling “yoga” and click on the images. What do you see? Historically, the images often featured primarily white individuals, predominantly women, and showcased extremely flexible and bendy poses. Thankfully, things are changing, with more diverse representation emerging.

We can start by shifting the conversation. Instead of making yoga solely about unattainable postures, we can talk about the beautiful practice that yoga is. We can emphasize the benefits, the inclusivity, and the fact that yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities.

Social media, when used thoughtfully, can be a powerful platform for meaningful conversations. It’s not just about showcasing physical feats but about sharing the wisdom and depth of yoga. As yoga practitioners and teachers, we have the opportunity to educate, inspire, and create a more profound understanding of this transformative practice.
